X7250 PHANTOM 2. RADIATOR SUSPENSION ETC. Herewith we send N. sch. 3062 shewing the single point radiator mounting in conjunction with the 3" cross member at the radiator. The latter has been modified so as to be a simple bend in one plane. This is an extension of N. sch. 3061. and as we believe nothing has been done with the latter we have taken the opportunity to modify the central fitting. The suspension springs at the side are based on the information supplied over the telephone on Monday last. We find on working it out however, that the springs Derby are using are somewhat highly stressed, and have the feature of not following up the maximum movement, causing, it appears to us, the possibility of a noise. In the springs shewn we have considerably increased their dimensions with a view to keeping the maximum stress down to 80,000 and ensuring that the spring follows the radiator throughout. The important features, namely, minimum load of 30 lbs. maximum load 100 lbs. and a movement of .250" on either side of the neutral, we have maintained. It occurs to us that the rubber block on the central fixing may not be entirely satisfactory, and we have suggested a spring there also. Since on the original design N. sch. 3059 we were restricted by the wish to use the existing cross member, we now think we should break away from this, and therefore have suggested a further alteration to the bottom tank of the radiator, but if desired experimentally, an existing radiator can be used by making some longer side brackets.
