| To Sg. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} From Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 2/MJ.16.12.34. Referring to our conversation on Bentley brakes. I could not understand why we had not taken more action with Da. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} 3/HP.23.2.34. I have looked into it and I find that Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} did not return from U.S.A. until the end of March and actually he never saw the memo. The fact that I had written across it for Grylls to see me meant that I considered there was something we had to follow up which I wanted to discuss with him. I find that we did get RHC {R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} 's. draughtsmen to get out a scheme for fixing the axle control at the end of the axles near the pivots but the scheme that they got out badly fouled the steering arm. Grylls says that he went along to see the Drawing Office People and asked for a scheme with the shock absorbers fixed in the front end of the frame so as to clear the foul. From that point nothing seems to have happened. The point I want to make clear to you is that no possible blame can be attached to Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} In fact, I am certain that if he had been handling the job it would not have faded out. I admit that the Experimental Dept. have done this job badly because it is not a part of our policy to wait - if we cannot get what we want we expect to do it ourselves. I am writing a report on this job but I am anxious that you should dismiss from your mind that Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} was in any way responsible for the delay.
