Many thanks for your Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 2/MJ.13.6.31 and for the information given. R. {Sir Henry Royce} was here yesterday and I gathered that he was not proposing to adopt Japan(Experimental Engine) III design of engine what I might call 100% but wasproposing to adopt it in principle and call the chassis Japan(Experimental Engine) II because it would not be either Japan(Experimental Engine) I or Japan(Experimental Engine) III.

He seemed quite keen to have the 5" stroke but was not so keen to have the .4 increase in bore, which had been approved for Japan(Experimental Engine) III.

I stressed the fact that I favoured it. I have also let E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} know my views so that he can help to influence things in that direction.

The other proposition referred to in the last paragraph of your memo. was discussed with R. {Sir Henry Royce} and he was quite in favour and has gone away to give the matter careful consideration.
