BENTLEY V. {VIENNA} EXHAUST SYSTEM.

Please receive herewith the following designs of the complete exhaust system for Bentley V. {VIENNA} based on the experimental systems in use on the existing B.V. cars. -

E.CD.944 (Sheets 1 and 2) Downtake and Intermediate Pipe.
E.CD.968 Front Silencer.
E.CD.969 Rear Silencer.
E.CD.975 (Sheets 1 and 2) Tail Pipe.

The exhaust manifold is the same as for the Wraith lll engine.

The system generally is very similar to the latest Wraith lll system using the three tube front silencer. The downtake pipe is 2.000 outside diameter, .104 thick S/D and unlagged. We have made the first intermediate pipe and the downtake as one pipe, deleting the flanges as an economy, the joint was originally supplied for assembly reasons, but we think it will be possible to assemble the pipe as drawn.

The front silencer is exactly the same as the Wraith lll, but rotated through 90° on its horizontal axis to obtain a reasonable ground clearance.

The rear silencer is similar in design to the Wraith lll. except for its length, the silencer shown being about as long as it is possible to make it, in the room available in the chassis.

The rear end of the tail pipe is swung outwards in plan to a point in line with the rear road wheel track, to conform with the recent experiments for elimination of the entry of exhaust gases into the car body.

Owing to this, we have had to support the rear of the tail pipe from a bracket bolted to the rear body bracket and the body bracket is altered for this purpose.

Will Da {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} /Ev. {Ivan Evernden - coachwork} and Da {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} /JD. {J. Draper - Frames} please note the positions of the exhaust supports, and arrange for clearance with the car bodies.

Will you please detail and instruct experimentally as soon as possible, so that this system can be tested with a view to being used on the production B.V. chassis.
