| OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXHAUST GAS ANALYZER 1. Turn switch to the OFF position. Turn No. 1 control all the way to the left. 2. Connect with 6 or 12 volt storage battery (or the car electrical system) by attaching battery clip marked (+) to the positive (+) post of battery and other battery clip to negative post. 3. Now turn switch to No. 1 position, then turn control No. 1 slowly to the right until meter pointer comes to rest on No. 1 zero (to extreme right of meter scale). This operation adjusts the proper voltage for the electrical circuit of the tester. With controls in this position the RED LIGHT will be illuminated. Do not attempt to use this instrument with RED LIGHT burning. 4. Following the foregoing adjustment do not disturb or change the setting of No. 1 control. Now turn switch to the No. 2 position and then turn No. 2 control until meter arrow comes to rest on No. 2 zero in centre of meter scale. This operation balances the wheatstone bridge of the tester, illuminates the GREEN LIGHT and tester is ready to receive exhaust gas for analysis. 5. With the motor at operating temperature, insert rubber tube fitting into exhaust tail pipe (place fitting at top of exhaust pipe to eliminate condensation flowing into tester). With the motor running at a medium rate of speed the exhaust gas will circulate through the instrument and will give the reading in approximately one-half minute. Motor may be operated at higher or lower speeds to further test motor combustion characteristics. After any change in motor speed or adjustment to motor or any of its related parts pertaining to combustion, allow one or two minutes for instrument to indicate the changed characteristics of the exhaust gases. 6. After instrument has once been adjusted as above instructed, it will not be necessary to repeat this adjustment for each car tested. Simply turn switch to No. 2 position and proceed with the gas analysis, although it should be remembered that in going from one car to another, a reasonable time element should be allowed for gas from the last car tested to be displaced by the new exhaust gas from the present car's operation. 7. With the storage battery fully charged it should only be necessary to adjust tester once each day. To check battery voltage, switch can be turned to No. 1 position and by turning No. 1 control, you should be able to move meter pointer beyond the No. 1 zero at the extreme right of the scale. If this cannot be done, battery should be replaced by one that is known to be in a fully charged condition. 8. Due to the condensation of water vapour in the exhaust gas, the gas tube to the tester will frequently collect water which if present in sufficient quantity, will interfere with the free flow of exhaust gas to the tester. To eliminate this interference, disconnect the gas tube at the tester fitting and drain any collected condensation. This should be done after testing each car and if the test is a long one, drain gas tube after any 10 minute operation. Cars should be tested so that the gas tube does not have kinks or short bends which would prevent the free flow of exhaust gas. IMPORTANT NOTE—The above indicated adjustments referred to in paragraphs 1 to 4, should only be made when it is certain that there is no exhaust gas in the instrument left from a previous test. To remove any remaining gas either attach air line to tail pipe fitting and allow a small volume of air to pass through the instrument, or remove gas tube from instrument and blow several times through the tester by means of the mouth, then follow instructions as set forth. This instrument contains a highly sensitive, and therefore delicate electrical meter, which operates on a few millionths of one ampere and only a few thousandths of one volt, which with reasonable care, freedom from hard knocks, bumps and other misuse, will give long and satisfactory trouble-free operation. Keep instrument clean, battery clips free from corrosion and this instrument will furnish long and satisfactory service.
