The failure took the form of deep cracks which extended right through and across the drum working face and were due to excessive temperature. We reduced the front braking by 10% on production, and we also said that French conditions were exceptional. The Wraith 24.G.V. which has done 24,000 miles in England under customer conditions has just done the same thing. It is, therefore, unwise to ignore the phenomena or to say that a 10% reduction will prevent all damage to drums. The four-shoe brake scheme SCD.734 has been produced to overcome this trouble. We have had our original design costed, and it is rather more expensive than the present brake, but we do not see why the Design Dept., knowing all the figures, should not reduce it. We shall have to test the first brake which has now done 10,000 miles more thoroughly with a view to ultimate standardisation, and we would like the Design Dept. to examine the drawings.
