X.3398 - PETO & RADFORD BATTERY FOR GOSHAWK(Aero Engine)(Codename for 20HP Car / Aero Engine after Kestrel(Aero Engine)). x4414

An enquiry has been made of Messrs. Peto & Radford for a battery suitable for the already designed box for the rear of frame position on the Goshawk(Aero Engine)(Codename for 20HP Car / Aero Engine after Kestrel(Aero Engine)). You will remember that this box was designed to take the C.A.V.Willard 12XR2. in accordance with instructions from W.W. It has, however, been considered advisable, in some part due to the failure of one cell of the only 12XR.2 C.A.V.Willard battery which we have, to have batteries of other makes ready for trial. With this end in view dimensions have been given to Messrs. Lucas and Messrs. Peto & Radford.

We attach a copy of Messrs. Peto & Radford's letter in answer to ours, from which you will see that they are desirous that we should, if possible, allow an increase in the length of the box in order to accommodate a battery which they recommend and say they can supply immediately. Upon referring this matter to the D.O. they tell me that although this could be done, nevertheless it would rather spoil the job, therefore I am putting it up to you so that you may take the matter up and advise me in due course as to what action I should take.

You will also note their suggestion of putting the cells direct into a teak box which is secured to the running board in the way indicated on the attached label.
