W. Hallam - Head Repairs} 9/W22.2.21. X 3653 Radiator Blanking Plates. We have found when the new pattern centre is fitted to the old radiator, and the standard blanking plates are used, there is a loud boom apparent in the engine at high speeds. This boom is considerably improved by the removal of the plates, and we would suggest that plates giving the same blanking area as the rectangular plates would be an improvement. The boom is apparently caused by the change of the air conditions at the edge of the present blanking plate. The plates might be of the form shown in the sketches below, in either case the effective area of the circular or annular plates being approximately equal to the present rectangular plates.
