Wraith Gearbox.

With reference to By {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} /CGH. {W Clough} 7/W.22.2.37 in which a number of suggestions are made to reduce cost, we do not agree that in all cases no design change is involved, for instance in No.6. an increase of the diameter of the hole in the 3rd motion shaft is undesirable as this shaft is sometimes highly stressed. We prefer that the Wraith pipe is tried in the Phantom.

In the case of No.1 according to our investigation the rocking shaft cannot be assembled in place when increased in length, as suggested, without alterations to the casing.

We consider that we should have been consulted before these suggestions were instructed to the Experimental department.

We give below further remarks concerning the suggestions:-

(1) We have made N.Sch. 5055 showing what we suggest. This drawing also shows the leverwhich is at present brazed on, secured by a press fit, and a taper bolt. We also ask for the stirrup to be made in cast iron as we think on examination of the actual piece that no increase of dimensions need be made (see also E {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} /HDY. {William Hardy} 2/HP.19.2.37).

(2) We are in agreement that the pin CW.189 at present used only on the 2nd speed should be used on top and 3rd also.

(3) We have no objection.

(4) The flanges on the top and 3rd outer member were made as small in diameter as possible to suit the use of tube or bar stock as requested by Sft. {Mr Swift} (see Sft. {Mr Swift} 1/BH.26.11.34 and Sft. {Mr Swift} 1/BH.9.1.35). We are not sure whether it is intended to take advantage of the economy said to be possible in these memos. If it is, the .250 increase in diameter of stock required with the suggested
