| To Sg. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} from E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hy. {Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} Da. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Lr {Mr Ellor} /Wst. Ey/RD. Thin Plate Batteries. Replying to your memo Sg. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} 2/E.27.10.36, the position is that we agreed to use a thin plate battery early in the production life of Phantom III, and it can be said that all Phantom III's are equipped with these batteries, having 13 thin plates per cell instead of 11 medium. We have recently signed a standardisation sheet for using a thin plate battery on Bentley production, but in this case 9 thin plates per cell are substituted for 9 medium plates, thereby reducing the size and weight of the battery. In the case of the 25/30 chassis, we propose to standardize a battery having 11 thin plates per cell in place of 9 medium, which will have the effect of increasing the discharge rates and capacity of the battery, but there would be no reduction in weight and size. All of these batteries will retain the feature mentioned in the second paragraph of E.4/HP.25.4.36, that is, the use of ebonite separators, in addition to the wood, which is superior to the common form of production battery equipped with wood separators only. With regard to the question of battery life, although this feature has been considerably improved by the use of voltage control, it is we understand very largely governed by the strength of the retaining matrix of the plate, or in other words, the thickness of the plate. The following figures have been given by Lr {Mr Ellor} /Wst for relative life:- Original thick plates - 5 years. Medium plates. - 3 " Thin plates. - 2 " | ||
