In view of the facts so far ascertained in connection with springs supplied by Firths and Woodheads respectively, there is no reason so far disclosed why we should favour Woodheads rather than Firths. The one point in favour of Woodheads was apparently increased durability, but this is undoubtedly due to the fact that their springs had polished top plates, whilst Firths had been instructed they must neither grind nor polish, but quote for springs produced from bar "as rolled". We will now in view of my decision to insist on ground and plated top plates, and the further change resulting from today's discussion, namely on upturned rear eye, for its intrinsic economy with no corresponding debit in strength, prepare drawings covering today's decision, viz. plain centre bolt, upturned rear eye, top plate ground and plated, the amount of grinding to be at least .010 per side, and obtain quotations from both Companies for similar quantities. Under these circumstances we will then be able to make an accurate estimate of what each of the concerns can supply on a reasonable profit making basis. By BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} | ||
