CHAIRMAN & MANAGING DIRECTOR T.W.DAFFERN, O.B.E. FCA FSAA H. {Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} N. GILLITT A. {Mr Adams} WHITTAKER GENERAL MANAGER YOUR REFERENCE: OUR REFERENCE: WMH/MS. January 18th 1938 Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby. ATTENTION OF MR. ROBOTHAM. Dear Sirs, Further our correspondence regarding the connecting rods for the 3½ Litre car, I am despatching to you today under separate cover, the two sets of conn rods requested for fitting the aluminium alloy bearings. With reference to your further letter addressed to Mr. Lyons, in which you kindly offer to assist in investigating the cause of running on in our engines, I am sending you a half cylinder head from our 1½ Litre car, which is the worst offender in this respect. We believe ourselves, the real cause of the trouble is the fact that the heads are so closely siamesed and the stud comes adjacent to the joint, that there is a large block of metal there which cannot be efficiently cooled and therefore increases the general temperature of the head beyond a safe limit. As we explained previously, I do not think that this running on can be caused by any one incandescent point, for apart from the fact that no signs can be seen in the engine when stripped down, we have used Sodium Cooled Valves and various types of plug without any effect one way or the other. We shall be most interested to have your views and will experiment along any line which you can suggest which will offer a solution. cont... | ||
