Re. 26-EX. Petrol Pumps.

We are surprised that considering all the trouble which Hancock has been having with the electrical petrol pumps we have not had a comprehensive summary from you as to the troubles that have been experienced and why these electrical petrol pumps, which we adopted because they had the virtue of being less sensitive to vapour on the suction side than the A.C., should put up such a poor show.

As things stand at present, the balanced cam on the camshaft which is badly needed to assist in obtaining silent timing gears, cannot be used because no provision has been left for the vacuum pump in the design, and since these electrical petrol pumps have failed we cannot do without the vacuum pump.

Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} considers that you could not be better employed than in investigating the petrol pumps under actual road conditions where they give trouble.

We think that you should be able to convince Hancock of the technical advantage of any scheme you wish to try, and by working with him clear the trouble up without asking us to duplicate your tests over here since we cannot get your atmospheric conditions or high speed road running. It is no good us drawing stuff here until you have proved it will work.
