| -3- however, try it again on 19-EX and let you have the results. I believe, although I am not quite clear, that it balanced itself, and we got a very bad clanking from the scissors of the servo when the brakes were applied. TAPPETS. The tappets on 19-EX are definitely noisier when warming up than on our present standard Phantom. We have noticed before when using a high compression head with standard valves they seemed noisier, but whether the camshaft is contributing anything further to the noise, I do not know. We have, of course, got larger valves and stronger springs. We are, of course, running with a valve clearance of .004" for the inlet, and .006" for the exhaust. We cannot run with a closer clearance for continental work. PETROL GAUGE. You will have seen from yesterday's and today's reports that we have obtained a considerable improvement by fitting an undamped gauge directly underneath the ammeter in the instrument patch, instead of at the side. Apparently the magnetic action of the ammeter attracted the petrol gauge. We have definitely no period as was observed previously before the fitting of the damped instrument. We should not think that an owner would object to the movement of the needle due to the wash of the petrol in the tank. If you consider so, then the damping[XXXXXXXX] will have to be done as you state. BONNET LOCKS. We do not wish to carry a jack about to open the bonnet, as you state would be necessary if stronger springs were fitted. We hade no intention of fitting stronger springs. What we should have said is that the movement allowed by the springs is too great. TORQUE REACTION DAMPERS. As regards getting more load on the torque reaction dampers, we do not think it would be practicable, and it is not possible with the springs we have. We have brought them up to 20 lbs load, leaving only .003" between the coils of the springs. Of course we can try them choc-o-bloc. We are trying out with the Hartford dampers slacked off to see what results we obtain. We will give you further particulars as to the results of the tests taken as you suggest. CARBURETTER. We are very pleased that you are taking an interest in conjunc-tion with us re. the carburetter, and we shall be very pleased to | ||
