'SS {S. Smith} ' BRAKES. X. 7360 X. 7420

The trouble of the rear brakes filling with water and mud is due to the lip on the guard overlapping the rib, on the brake drum, so causing the latter to act as a pump, thus :

SEE ORIGINAL FOR SKETCHES.

The axles we saw in the Expl: shop seemed to be all like this. We see that on N.Sch.2472 the two are shewn flush which is wrong because of manufacturing variations; on the Derby general arrangement the rib is slightly outside the lip, thus :

We suggest that more tolerance should be given say thus :

Another advantage of this would be that when filing the linings for bedding purposes the guard would not interfere with the file. This also applies to the front brakes, the width of the guard lip there being also reamed, thus :

The drain holes in the drum which are shewn on N.sch. 2234 - seem to be too many and too large. We suggest fitting trying four - .212 holes.
