Bailey - Chief Engineer} /L/G.9.1.28. RECEIVED EXPERIMENTS IN CHROMIUM PLATING. It is suggested that we should plate with chromium a certain number of parts which are subject to heavy wear and tear with the object of ascertaining how such chromium plated articles will stand up under service conditions. The following items are suggested :- 1/- A set of Silico Manganese Gudgeon Pins for Phantom engine, similar to those recently instructed, but to have a brinell of 369 to 402. 2/- Water Pump Rotor Spindle. This should be chromium plated along the length covered by the bearing and the glands. 3/- Rear Brake Actuating Shafts in 3.5% nickel steel, chromium plated on bearings and in the socket for the toggle. The Drawing Office should prepare special drawings by marking up blueprints, and should arrange for a thickness of .00075" to .001" as representing the amount of chromium that will be deposited on the parts. The surfaces on the pieces which should be chromium plated must be clearly indicated. After the Experimental Department have prepared the pieces they should be sent to the Order Office for despatch to some outside firm, who are already well experienced in this particular form of plating. We believe that the Fescol Co. are actually dealing with chromium plating commercially, the other name given to us by the Experimental Department was Fesco - this may possibly be the Fescol Co.
