We send herewith N.Sch.4892 showing the offside and nearside bell crank levers for the rear brakes. These levers are provided with "on" stops, so that failure of one rear brake does not cause the loss of the other also. The rod lengths are to be adjusted so that the stops of the bell crank levers and the equalised idler lever come into action simultaneously. The travel allowed by the stops is intended to be equal to 4.750" travel of the centre of the pedal plate after making an allowance of 1.0" at the pedal plate for the lost motion due to the servo. As the pedal has a total travel of 5.250" there is a margin of .5" to ensure that a failure on the rear brake equaliser will not merely let the pedal down to the board instead of the stop coming into action with the pedal clear of the board. We understand that all the pedals plates are to be moved back .5" by lengthening the plate stems in order to accomodate thick matting, as on the Phantom III, and in this case the brake pedal travel as shown by Lec.5147 can be taken as 5.250" as stated above, when slight compression of the matting is allowed.
