| To RHC. {R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} c. to E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 27/KW.19.12.35. With reference to your RHC. {R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} 1/ EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} 19.12.35, giving the position of the large bore 20/25 which you are building, the only comments I have to make are as follows :- Crankcase & Bearings. You do not mention that the oil grooves should be put in the connecting rod and not in the top half of the big end bearing. Also I find that the drawing of the crankcase is incorrect, and that a radius has been left off the flange where the bearing caps fit. This radius is most important as it stopped the big bore crankcase cracking. Crankshaft. LOP. EB.2700. Now that we have found it necessary to open out the main bearing clearances to greater than white metal, we anticipate that wemay find the oil feed to the pins is inadequate. We should therefore like to back up with parts instructed in Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Smth.14/KW.13.11.35. We agree to the standard pieces being fitted to start with in this unit. Spring Drive & Slipper Wheel. These should be standard and not the large slipper wheel type. Valves & Fittings. The throat size of the inlet and exhaust valves should be the same as the present standard 20/25 to begin with. Inlet Pipes. It will be appreciated that the inlet pipes constructed lack the drain, but we agree that these are the best that can be instructed at present. Will you please urge the experimental drain scheme, so that we can give design final particulars. | ||
