WRAITH BRAKES

We are getting complaints of brake squeaks on Wraith cars, particularly on light application in traffic.

The combination of dissimilar linings using one rubber base lining in each drum has been run over 25,000 miles on 27.G.VI. The brakes have remained effective throughout the mileage, and the amount of adjustment required from time to time has been normal.

Approximately 15,000 miles were run without any sign of squeaking, but during the subsequent mileage slight squeaks occurred occasionally from the rear brakes. These were not of such magnitude as to be likely to cause complaints from the average customer.

With the liners previously used, objectionable squeaking developed at 5,000 miles.

The present combination is Thermoid and Ferodo RL, the latter being fitted to the trailing shoes. After braking hard at high speeds, there is a smell of burnt rubber, but this is not likely to be a source of complaint.

We recommend standardisation of this combination, and we can then issue instructions to use this material when dealing with complaints on cars in service.
