| X P3 for Shaft 337 BRITISH MADE “MECHANICS” UNIVERSAL JOINTS ROLLER BEARING TYPE. “MECHANICS” Roller Bearing Universal Joints have many distinctive features. This type of joint provides greater load capacity, greater efficiency, and greater angular capacity with less friction and much lower operating temperatures than are obtainable with plain bearing types of universal joints. “MECHANICS” FEATURES 1. FITTING YOKE. Plain yoke or flanged fittings interchangeable with all types of joints. 2. ROLLER BEARING ASSEMBLY. Small rollers operating on hardened and ground alloy steel surfaces provide greater load capacity with less wear than any other type of bearing. 3. LUBRICANT SEAL. A thoroughly efficient seal against leakage of the lubricant and the ingress of dirt and water is provided by cork packing washers. These are completely enclosed in steel stampings which are pressed on to the spider and into the bearings. 4. SPIDER. The spider, which is made from a heat-treated alloy steel forging, is large and rugged and will withstand heavy torque strains. 5. END THRUST. The end thrust is taken at the bottom of the bearing hole on a hardened surface which is perfectly lubricated. 6. LUBRICANT RESERVOIR. The roller bearings are supplied with lubricant from a large reservoir in the centre of the spider. 7. LUBRICANT PASSAGE. The lubricant is forced from the reservoir to the bearings through large passages in the journals of the spider. 8. LUBRICANT INLET. The reservoir is filled through an oil plug hole in the spider. A semi-fluid lubricant is most efficient. 9. RELIEF VALVE. Prevents damage to oil seal by relieving excess pressure in filling. 10. SLIP YOKE. Accurately machined from a high grade steel forging for perfect balance and a close sliding fit on the splined stub shaft. 11. LUBRICANT RETAINER FOR SPLINED STUB. A felt washer between two steel washers prevents loss of lubricant and ingress of dirt and water. 12. BALANCE. All parts are completely machined for perfect balance. This is very important, as rough un-machined sections in any part will cause an unbalanced condition, the result of which is an objectionable and harmful vibration. “MECHANICS” Roller Bearing Universal Joints are standard equipment in high class lorries, buses and passenger cars. This is due to the fact that they fulfil all requirements of the modern demands for greater loads, higher speeds without vibration and maximum economy in service and operation. “MECHANICS” Replacement Assemblies are furnished in the Roller Bearing type.
