OUR REFERENCE EHD/NC. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited, Derby. 16th February, 1938. Dear Sirs, Timken Steering Gear Bearing No. 31.C - 32.C. Referring to the recent visit to your Works of the undersigned and our Auto. Sales Manager, Mr. W. E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hobley, and their discussion with Mr. Hardy, we beg to confirm the points raised as follows:- (1) We are quite in agreement with the diameter of the undercut on the bearing cone machined on the cam remaining at 1.570" instead of 1.5834" as shown on our drawing No. TS/S.21017.A. The slight reduction in capacity of the bearing is, we understand, of no consequence in practice, as the capacity has been found to be ample for the application. We are pleased to learn, in this respect, that the Timken bearings are giving satisfactory service. (2) With respect to our query as to the sufficiency of cage clearance, having particular reference to the dimension of 1/2" between the end of the cone and the adjacent face of the cam, shown on your drawing No. FW.168, we understand that this applies to one model only, and that no trouble with cage clearance has been experienced in practice. We also noted from the set of sample parts shown to us that actually a clearance of 1/32" was obtained, and that there appears very little possibility of the end of the cage fouling on the cam in practice.
