| (2) 15. MAGNETO. As the magneto on the 20/25 is carried as a standby ignition only, and is not in regular use, it might be considered whether it is still desirable to fit it in view of the effort to get down the cost of this chassis. This would save: £6. 18. 0. E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} will consider this question. It is suggested that we fit a telltale coloured light to indicate when battery ignition is left switched on with engine stopped, as is now common practice on cars in general. This will reduce the risk of running the battery down and may be sufficiently good reason to omit the standby magneto ignition particularly if a spare coil is provided. 16. GEARBOX SELECTOR MECHANISM. The selector mechanism of the 20/25 is more expensive than P. 2. and has more pieces. If 20/25 is made like P. 2. savings would be: Nett material 1. 8. 8 Nett labour 6. 0 Total nett saving 7. 9. 8 E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Ed. {J. L. Edwards} and H. {Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} will consider the gearbox generally and will get in touch with R. {Sir Henry Royce} on the subject with a view to redesigning the box generally and incorporating a helical third gear with dog clutch operation. It was considered that a gearbox of this type would be fairly straightforward and easy to produce and would give us a more silent 3rd. speed than we now have and make the change between 4th. and 3rd. (which is the change most frequently made) easier. 17. GEARBOX SELECTOR RODS. These rods on which slide the gear control forks are attached to the gearbox by three separate flanges, one on each rod. If P. 2. method of one bracket for the three rods were used the saving in cost would be: Material 5 Nett labour 3 Total nett saving 8 Same remarks apply as to item 16. 18. GEARBOX COVERS. The radial webs for oil collecting on the underside of these covers project beyond the joint facing of the cover, necessitating machining by end mill. P. 2. has the facing beyond the radial webs and the joint facing can be quickly cleaned up on a Disc wheel. Nett labour 3 Same remarks apply as to item 16. | ||
