| Oy10-E-4526 April 5th, 1926 Mr. Claude Johnson, Rolls-Royce, Ltd., London, England. (Copy for attention of Mr. F. {Mr Friese} H. {Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Royce " " " " Works Committee " " " " Mr. Beaver " " " " Mr. Nadin (England) " " " " Mr. Burton) Dear Sir: Re Front Springs Since writing report Oy2-E-4526 regarding the stiffening effects on the front springs we have made a set of springs for 12-MC, the Phantom car at the Works, which have the desirable characteristics indicated by our tests. Namely: (a) The springs have approximately 1/2" negative camber when the car is loaded with 4 passengers as is standard front-brake practice. (b) The stiffness between flat and 1" negative is approximately 340 lbs. per inch when the spring is clipped to the wide axle pad. This corresponds to a spring of 1200 lbs. with 3-1/2" initial deflection (When the car is loaded with 4 passengers the load on the spring is 1200 lbs). (c) The front shackle is set approximately vertical. After 300 miles running we are satisfied that the riding quality of the car is considerably improved, and in fact that it closely approaches average Silver Ghost(1907 40/50 historic RAC 15,000 miles trial) riding. | ||
