| ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. OY2.R.12.20.27 December 20th, 1927. Mr. E.W. Hives, Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. Dear Mr. Hives: CONFIDENTIAL RE FOREIGN CARS 1927 LA {L. A. Archer} SALLE Enclosed curve for a La {L. A. Archer} Salle Sedan, received from New Haven (Yale laboratory) may be interesting to you in comparison with the figures you are getting on the Phantom and 20 HP. The power referred to is power at the flywheel, and the difference between standard head and high compression (ethyl gas) head is clearly shown. The weight is surprisingly high for such a small car being about 80% of a Phantom of similar body type. The negative horsepower during coasting is astonishing and is I think the whole reason why low-geared cars with high-speed engines give such disappointing results in fuel-consumption. The work has been done on the Yale traction dynamometer and I think results are accurate to about ± 2%. Yours very truly, Maurice Olley MO/R Encl. | ||
