Ph.II Rear Universal Joint.

We enclose the result of some tests we have done on 22-EX.

It appears that by using a hunchback bridge the maximum damping does not prevent the joint from fouling, although the tendency to foul is reduced.

We are having the angular movement of the rear universal of 22-EX increased to give as much as possible out of the existing pieces. The present angular movement is 15°. I have not heard yet what movement 28-EX has got. At one time every production shaft was tested for movement. This is not done now. The drawing gives 15°-24° as a limit.

We have also measured the amount the axle twists when a car is towed with the rear wheels locked. This is 5° for a static test. However it may be greater under road conditions. We are having some tackle made to check the maximum axle twist under road conditions.

The axle twist due to an extreme rebound of 7.5" is 6.6°.

I will let you know further results when we have tested the shaft with increased movement.

Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Les.

The mod. has given the universal 19°.
