S.S. & PHANTOM REAR BRAKE - OIL DRAIN HOLES IN DRUMS.
----------------------------------------------------

Referring to DAL/M7.1.29. we are modifying the mud and dust excluder as shown immediately, but we are not sure that the final paragraph if put into operation at once will not land us in trouble.

The object of the large number of holes is to drain the oil out when the car is stationary, as obviously it is when the car is still and oil is forced in that the lip of the oil catcher is likely to be over-topped, and the oil run on to the brake shoes.

We are asking the Experimental Department to reduce the existing proposal for 12 holes .187" diameter, to 6 holes .187" diameter, as a pure experiment.

We appreciate that water can be forced in, but we do not think that this is nearly such a disadvantage as is likely to accrue if the oil discharge holes are insufficient to cope with the over-flow from the axle and the lubricating scheme. In the second case there is real danger.
