JAPAN(Experimental Engine) 3. - ENGINE. If we have got to have spring drive I think the aero engine type which we decided for the private venture engine the best. But I hope you will decide that it is not wanted because the gears at back or stiffer crankshafts only need damper, and not spring drive. Information seems to point to double bearings at rear, and gears there also. Any slipper wheel should have bearings to prevent it thrusting to friction plate against flapping. We could make simpler job if we could take torque from flywheel casing and hold up engine at nose, like at gearbox, by removing fan pulley and putting on sheet steel plate to carry vertical weight of engine. You will see the casting (crankchamber) will be a much simpler casting, and then if we could do with 3 driving wheels instead of 5 we should be doing something to counter-balance other costs. I am sure these ideas if they are possible are worth a struggle and the time taken. R. {Sir Henry Royce} | ||
