| FILE X5080 from Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Whyman. 16.3.33. Re. AIR SILENCER TO LEC.3363. FOR 25 HP. CAR. We have now tested the above air silencer on 18.G.IV. and consider that it is quite O.K. for silence. A power curve has been run off on a production test bed by C.Hare, and the accompanying graph shows that it is slightly better for power than the standard air silencer at present fitted to 25 HP. Tank engines. One trouble we have run into, however, is excessive oil consumption, due to the oil getting into the air silencer downtake pipe from the crankcase via the breather pipe. We ran two oil consumption tests yesterday over a 160 miles course, and with the breather pipe blanked off from the air silencer our oil consumption was 640 m.p.g. but with the breather in operation the oil consumption was only 320 m.p.g. From this it can be seen that we want some form of baffle inside the crankcase to prevent the oil from being thrown into the breather pipe. Judging from the quantity of oil which is actually thrown out of the crankcase breather hole, it seems that the trouble is due more to splash than suction from the carburetter.
