Manoeuvred car backwards down the hill (a very narrow, tortuous lane of the aforesaid gradient) and finally got to the bottom. Found car then drivable but bad grinding noise with clutch in; gears in neutral. Finally drove car with considerable amount of grinding noise in gearbox, also a loud tap from the engine which sounded like excessive valve clearance, to Shrewsbury and handed it over to Mr. Whyman. The test hill is one that I think the car should have climbed easily and would have done have not clutch slipped. Local people tell me that several Bentleys have been noticed passing over this hill and a motor cycle trial was in progress while I was there - in fact I rather blocked their way. Should like to try this hill again when the car is in proper order. It is a very fine test but Spectre(Codename for Phantom III) should be equal to it. Cx. {Major Len W.
