Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} R. {Sir Henry Royce} Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hsy. RHG. Spectre(Codename for Phantom III) Propeller Shaft. We have looked into the question of providing a plain parallel tube for the Spectre(Codename for Phantom III) propeller shaft but it does not seem possible to do it using the existing 25-HP Universal Joints. If the shaft is 2.625 o {Mr Oldham} /d the whirling speed is 7160 r.p.m. compared with Bentley 6970. This may be considered a sufficient margin, but the tube is then too large to get on separate ends, as the joint ring will not pass over the ends of the tube. If we invert the joint so that the loose pins are on the propeller shaft instead of on the flange pieces, then the joint rings will not pass over the flanges, the diameter of the latter being limited by the taper on the pinion shaft. We therefore propose that the propeller shaft should be of the existing 20/25 type, i.e. with swaged down ends, using existing 20/25 HP. needle roller bearing joints, but 2.625 o {Mr Oldham} /d x .104 thick, and of the spectre(Codename for Phantom III) length (approximately 48.375). We do not propose to send a design of this. Da. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
