RG. {Mr Rowledge} R2/MA.2.26. EAC.7. REAR BRAKES. These could go on trial with Phantom, but we are trying another design for the following reasons - simpler and lighter, ferodo for hand brake, better cooling of hand brake drums - (1) Side by side are best and simplest, as in 20 HP., but improvements may be possible. (2) Both one width for many reasons: interchangeable hand brake requires surface for excessive load, foot brake for wear. (3) Foot brake nearest wheel. (4) Operating shafts seem definitely to ask to be behind axle, though they may get close to petrol tank, but levers and rods better disposed - that is, unlimited movement. (5) The two operating shafts at least 2" apart centres, (with hold off springs between perhaps), should also be tried on the 20 HP.) (6) Drum decreased to 16" dia. and not more than 4" over-all width. (7) Support made of duralumin forging and two duralumin pressings somewhat thus :- SEE ORIGINAL FOR SKETCH. (8) Shoes made of duralumin forgings. (9) A stepped drum although stiffer is trouble by end clearances. Side by side is good as drum can over-run shoes, and in many ways is simpler and better for cooling - one thinks for stiffness it should be reeded - simple pressing from thick sheet turned all over. contd :- | ||
