Ph.III and 25/30 HP. Steerings.

Re E.5/HP.5.5.36.

The reasons for the differences between the Ph.III and 25/30 HP. steerings are as follows.

Cam Lead.

Ph.III - 0.800"; 25/30 HP. - 0.700".

The 0.700" lead is used on 25/30 HP. in conjunction with a long pendulum lever as it gives slightly better results as regards joggles. This lead cannot be used on Ph.III because we do not want a lower geared steering at present and the pendulum lever length cannot be increased owing to insufficient ground clearance.

Cam Bearings.

Ph.III - Adamant; 25/30 HP. - Timken.

The 25/30 HP. specification was drawn up after that of Ph.III and is more up-to-date. Timken bearings will be standardised on Ph.III when they have been 10,000 miles tested.

Wheel Bearings.

Ph.III - Adamant; 25/30 HP. - Ball.

The 25/30 HP. is also more up-to-date in this feature.

This completes the list of differences between the two cars. We require a scheme for the use of ball bearings on the Ph.III wheel to suit 0.800" lead before we can test this feature.
