With reference to the proposed ventilated clutch and casing for the Wraith, it seems to us that it would be worth while making a preliminary trial with a standard Bentley clutch casing provided with holes as shown by N.Sch.4891, in order to find out whether it is necessary in our case to follow the Borg and Beck type of ventilating holes in the casing. The objections to the Borg and Beck scheme are that it makes a heavier and more costly casing. We show gauze to protect the inlets but it would appear that the mesh will have to be very open if it is not to seriously restrict the air flow. We do not think that it will be possible to prevent dust from being drawn in. Sheet metal inlet ducts are shown which we suggest as a means of increasing the air flow if found necessary. It should be noted that with the ventilated casing there is likely to be less pressure in the casing adjacent to the rear crankshaft bearing than with our present casing. A print is attached to Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 's copy and the original to BY's copy.
