Rolls Royce Limited, Experimental Department, D E R B Y. Dear Sirs, With reference to your recent comments regarding the Lavine Steering Gear, we contacted with the American Factory quoting extracts from your recent favour. Their reply is to the effect that we can assure yourselves, that Lavine never had, in their three years of development and testing in this new ball type, any indication of the balls hammering into the worms. It is stated that this is impossible even if the worms were soft. The linkage between the front wheels and the worm cam, has so many places to absorb an impact load from the front wheels that there is no possibility of any brinneling action taking place. Lavine state that they experimented with one, two, three and four Balls and only after extended research, adopted the present construction. Lavine feel that the criticisms may have emanated in the States from competitors who at the present time, are vicious in their statements due to the fact that the new gear is making it very difficult for them in competition. They go on to say that they anticipated getting reports of this nature, because their competitors now realise that the Lavine Steering Gear is a type which has to be very seriously reckoned with, as they consider it -contd.- [Text in left margin]: Quotations and Contracts are subject to revision of Duty, Transportation Costs, and to acceptance by the Factory; also to unforeseen delays arising from strikes, lockouts, transportation, war, &c., and force majeure. | ||
