| TO - WDR. EG. H. {Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Ev. {Ivan Evernden - coachwork} RS. {Sir Henry Royce's Secretary} BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} RY. SRC. ORIGINAL LIST OF SUGGESTIONS MADE TO REDUCE THE COST OF THE 25HP. CHASSIS, TOGETHER WITH DECISIONS ARRIVED AT DURING A CONFERENCE IN DERBY ON DECEMBER 31. 1930. 1. CRANKCASE. On 20/25 chassis the dynamo is fixed by two complete steel straps whereas on P. 2. the dynamo is fixed by 1 strap only. Also the method of attaching the straps to the crankcase is simpler on P. 2. If P. 2. practice is adopted on 20/25 savings can be made as follows: Material 10s Nett labour 1. 6d Total nett saving 2. 5. E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} agreed to make design. 2. CRANKCASE. The oil gallery pipe and branches to the main bearings on the 20/25 are more expensive to produce than the P. 2. design. If P. 2. design is adapted to 20/25 economies can be made as follows: Material 2. 4. Nett labour 3. 2. Total nett saving 5. 6. E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} agreed to make design. 3. CRANKCASE. The studs which hold on the water pump are screwed into brass inserts. If the studs could be screwed direct into the aluminium, the following nett saving could be made: Material 4d Nett labour 3d Nett saving 7d Decided that BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} will instruct this for present engine. 4. TIMING GEARS. If the idler gear of the 20/25 were mounted on plain bearings instead of ball bearings similar to P. 2., a nett saving of 2. 5. could be made. It would be a further economy if the two plain bearings were made of equal size. It might also be considered whether plain bearings may not be substituted for ball bearings on the dynamo, water pump and distributor pinions. Apart from being less costly it is considered that gear quietening would be easier. E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} agreed to make design. (1) | ||
