| 1020a Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 3/R. 14th September, 1938. J.W. Howlett, Esq., Wellworthy Piston Rings Limited, LYMINGTON, Hants: Dear Mr. Howlett, On returning from my holiday I understand from Salt, who is now my Assistant responsible for bearing work, that you would like to have a general discussion on the bearing position, and it is suggested that this takes place at Lymington. Amongst other points, apparently there is a desire to revert to A.C.6 alloy. I feel very strongly that any such meeting should be at Derby, and that, if possible, Hives should be present; also Hall, who has done all the research work on the alloy, and Wheeler, who is conversant with the production problems. The question of Technical Liason also requires clarifying. Somebody has got to settle such issues as - (1) When do we tell a Company who is trying out the bearing material that they are not giving it a fair chance, and that, therefore, we should recommend them to transfer their attentions to other materials? A case in point is Dennis. Our opinion is that unless they provide a 5-bearing crankshaft Dennis will not get away with their centre bearing. They do not agree. Even if they did agree it would come down to the fact that we should have, more or less, to redesign their engine for them. This can hardly be undertaken light-heartedly. | ||
