| X3398 EFC {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} 2/T. Sept. 2nd. 1921. Messrs. Peto & Radford, 50, Grosvenor Gardens, London, S.W.1. Dear Sirs, Re Lighting & Starting Batteries. The two batteries of your make, e.g. the 97½ lbs. type PDL.9. 60 ampere-hour, ebonite battery received by us July 1919, and the 107½ lbs, type HDE.13, 60 ampere-hour ebonite battery received Aug. 1920, have been running on Rolls-Royce cars; the first one on Mr. Northey's Trials Car and the second on our Demonstration or School Car both since January last, the latter car having run 15,000 miles in all with that battery. We have had reports from time to time that both these batteries have given good service on the road, and this remains the case up to the present time. On tests on the bench previous to placing these batteries on the cars, the first of the two did not show up particularly well. The second showed up considerably better. We will here only mention our high rate discharge capacity tests which consists in discharging the battery through an invariable resistance of .0763 ohm. We consider that on this test the battery should be capable of giving an initial current not less than 140 amperes, which current should not fall below 120 amperes up to a period of 5 minutes.
