Rattles from the gear lever during torque reaction and at high engine speeds are still complained of, even with the new type lever in which the whole knob is depressed to operate the reverse catch. The noise has two causes; firstly movement of the lever sideways in the gate and secondly vibration of the many parts - trigger, rod, pins etc. - of the reverse catch one on the other. We have tried altered spring loads, reducing clearances, inserting rubber wherever possible, but have come to the conclusion that we shall never be free from rattles until we eliminate all moving parts. On 1-B-IV we have substituted for the usual arrangement a lift up plate as on the Alfa over the reverse position in the change speed gate, the knob being solid with the lever. This still left us with a noise made by the side play of the lever in the gate. In the past we have made the lever a tight fit in top gear, but it has never been considered a production job. We heard from Hd {Mr Hayward / Mr Huddy} /WT. that he has overcome several complaints on the 20/25 by fitting a piece of rubber on the frame against which the selector shaft presses in top and 3rd gear. The elimination of a moving reverse catch and this piece of rubber have stopped all rattles on 1-B-IV. If it is agreed that we could use a catch on the gate we should like a design for doing so, and in any case think the rubber pad scheme worth fitting. This also requires a suitable design.
