Camshaft Balancer - Wraith III.

As the Wraith III is to have a Fabroil type of camshaft wheel there is some doubt as to whether the camshaft balancing device is necessary as it was originally added merely to reduce timing gear rattles at low speeds.

In order to test the possible effect of the deletion of the camshaft balancer on timing gear wear as well as noise, will you please leave the camshaft balancing tappets out on the 2nd. Wraith III engine which is to be built, as agreed with Mr/Gry. {Shadwell Grylls}

The camshaft balancer costs 38/- on the 25/30 and should cost about 30/- on Wraith III with the BZ/FO tappet guides instead of case-hardening nickel steel. If we can do without the balancer the saving will be about 25/-, as a camshaft bearing, which is now carried in the balancer, will have to be provided.

The instructions which have already been issued for reducing the cost of the camshaft balancer will stand, and should be applied to all Wraith engines.

Instructions will shortly be issued for the parts to be made in low carbon case-hardening steel for the 3rd. Wraith III engine.
