contd :- -2-

The pistons on first part of test appeared to be on the tight side. When starting up from dead cold they knocked and we experienced the clapping sound from the rings. This gradually wore away as the mileage increased and at 2000 was not noticeable. We have had no further signs of piston knocks when hot or cold. When head was dismantled there was approx. .020" of carbon in the head and on top of pistons.

IGNITION PLUGS.

Lodge detachable type. We have had one failure due to the porcelain being cracked. They have been cleaned and reset twice to .020". Carbon deposit on the points was normal. There has been no sign of over-oiling of plugs.

ENGINE GEARS.

These have been very good throughout the test.

ENGINE CASE.

There has been a slight oil leak between rear cyl. block and engine case. The condition of case is good.

TORQUE REACTION DAMPERS - LOP. E.76187.

The anchorage and dampers are still in good condition

CONTROLS 'D' TYPE LOP. E.76325

These have operated satisfactorily throughout the test, no appreciable wear can be detected.

INLET PIPE TO LOP. E.75417.

We have examined this at finish of test and find it to be quite sound. We have not experienced any signs of building up, or poor distribution.

EXHAUST MANIFOLDS.

We have had trouble with the copper asbestos washer blowing out from between No.1 and 6 cyl. ports. We are of the opinion that the cause is uneven expansion of the manifold and the studs when travelling at high speeds for long durations. The washer is burnt out gradually until a leak is made which then rapidly increases.

EXHAUST DOWNTAKE PIPES.

We had considerable trouble with the front down pipe due to distortion. The welded joint at bottom broke away, the pipe then dropped approx. 1" and went back to approx. 1 1/2". The top end of the pipe had distorted and the strain was the cause of the trouble. We have had the same experience previously when the bottom joint was a sliding one, the joint coming adrift. There does not appear to be the same tendency to distort if there is no lagging on the pipe. contd.
