| [Stamp: RECEIVED 4 JUN 1931] [Handwritten: X235.] [Redacted Distribution List:] Md. C. WOP. C. EH. C. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. Mr. Brock SHOCK DAMPERS. ---------- In connection with the shock damper complaints which we have been having, a situation arises which demands consideration. In two instances viz. chassis 123-GY. Messrs. Rippon Bros., and chassis GNS-40, Order No. 89150, shock dampers, including all the modifications and improvements we know of, have been sent but were returned with a complaint that 'bad rattles' have been experienced. Mr. Brock, on receipt of these dampers at the Works, confirms that there is nothing he can do to same to improve them, and therefore a policy which merely replaces dampers under these circumstances does not meet the case. I would suggest that it is necessary, when we know that a customer is complaining of shock dampers which have been delivered to him recently and include all our known improvements, that it is essential some one should go and hear exactly what the complaint consists of, as firstly, the rattle may not be the damper, it may be in the connection, Secondly, if it is the damper, then we would acquire experience as to what it is the customer is complaining of, and would then be able to intelligently consider the problem. In the case of the damper from Messrs. Rippon Bros. we have handed this over to the Test Department, asking them to put it on a car, but this may not be helpful, as we know that certain types of bodies exaggerate slight knocks in the dampers much more than others, and therefore any evidence we gain by this cannot be conclusive.
