[P]ump designed in N.Sch.2736 returned the plunger to its seating in 1 min. 15 secs. in very cold weather, and in 15 secs. in warm. Mr. Bijur has increased his from originally 1 min. to 3 or 4 mins., while Luvax recommend 5 mins. as the minimum time. This is with their own oil, and since we anticipate using an oil less viscous, (Springfield do this) that is another reason for increasing our capacity.

We are certain we must not use anything less in capacity than No.(1) on N.Sch.2830, and as far as spring pressure goes, we certainly must give the 100 lbs/sq.in. a trial.

We find that a positive return of the valve to its seating by means of a small helical spring on top of the piston spigot and inside the piston rod, enables us to reduce the velocity loss when the valve closes.

We are also able to allow the valve to open further, i.e. XX .125" to admit oil more readily into the cylinder.

We will however try out your new scheme and report on it.

[Handwritten] The pump uses

a spring of special strong section to take the heavy load. If we cannot do this, there would seem to be no reason why we should not use two springs, one within the other.

We think that the 10,000 miles test rather demonstrated that the system worked satisfactorily than gave us any definite results. In the first place the pedal was
