CHROMIUM PLATING

Further to your memo of the 6th inst (BY2/GG.1.28), I understood quite clearly in your previous memo that the reason for picking the Valve Spring for Plating, it would show us difficulties quickly. By all means, do what you and the Exptl Dept. think best to try out this plating.

I hope that Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} does not think that you or I are putting any difficulties in the way of trying Chromium Plating. It would appear that Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} may have something in his mind to that effect, when he suggests that there was some delay in introducing Cadmium Plating. I do not know of any delay that took place as a result of any opposition either by you or I in the introduction of Cadmium Plating; as a matter of fact Cadmium could have been introduced earlier if Exptl Dept. or any other Dept. had pointed out its advantages to me. As a matter of fact, I knew nothing about the subject until I received a wire from R. {Sir Henry Royce}

I hope it is not thought that there is any desire to stop progress in new developments. I do want to assure everybody I am very keen on improvements, and it is possibly the first time it has been suggested that we are in the way of progress.
