There has been a general transmission period from 40 M.P.H. upwards. The ankerage for the shock damper ball ends on the axle require strengthening. The ball end on the N/S came loose and the steel pressing became twisted.
REAR BRAKES
Maximum braking has been obtained, bad squeaks developed. These could be immediatly damped out by light pressure of the hand brake. The guide washers for the brake shoes are not strong enough, the side pressure bends them outwards. The actuating shafts are OK and appear to be well lubricated. We have not had any trouble with the operating of the brakes. The brake drums are in good condition. There is no scoring of the braking surface. Wear however produces more lost movement at the pedal than on the std. car
REAR BRAKE EQUALIZING MECHANISM. LOP G 76924 NS {Norman Scott} 2666/7. STRENGTHENED SUPPORTS FOR EQUALIZING SHAFTS TO EX 3848.
Increased braking on the rear has resulted in preventing the distortion in the equalizing shafts.
REAR SHOCK DAMPERS LOP F 79925 NS {Norman Scott} 2800-2 STRENGTHEND TYPE DAMPER CASINGS
We have not had any mechanical trouble with the dampers. Oil leaks have been cured and reported upon. We have run most of the milage without the restrictions and brought the poundage up to 100. They have operated satisfactorily under these conditions. The tests carried out with various loads have been reported. The lubrication of the contacts and ballends of the connecting links has been satisfactory. after altering the Bijurs from 80 to 51. Agreed B.Y. counter sunk screws to be soldered.
REAR SPRINGS AND FITTINGS TO LOP F 79627 TYPE 1200
The lubrication has been good. We examined one spring similar to the front. The leaves were well lubricated the whole lengh, slight rust had formed on the two bottom leaves. The well lubricated springs are very flexible and require more than the usual amount of damping to prevent the frequent hitting of the buffers. The 100 lbs damping load gave us the desired effect for normal loading, more is desirable for the maximum of four passengers in the rear. The shackles and pins are amply lubricated.
REAR SPARE WHEEL CARRIER (SINGLE) LOP D 72147 NS {Norman Scott} 2811
Stainless Steel washer P.
The rear spare wheel carrier has given considerable trouble through the triangular stay siezing in the bearings on the rear cross member. This has made it difficult to get the spare wheel off. Two spare wheels are preferable for continental touring. We have had occasions when two tyres have been puntured during a run. B.Y. agreed to give more clearance and joint to be filled with lanoline no rust found in the joint.
SUBFRAME TO LOP F 79575 NS {Norman Scott} 2695
We have not had any defects develop with the subframe or it's mountings. We have observed that the width of the subframe is the limit for the body work in well of the rear wheels to allow clearance on maximum bump for the brake drums and brake ankerage nuts.
