| BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ) FROM R. {Sir Henry Royce} L. ) C. to EG. WCR. (Struck through) C. to RD. HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re. S.A.E. JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 1930. R3/M29.9.30. 03032 From some information we have seen in the above, E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} suggests that HL. be asked to investigate the possibility of our being able to produce an aluminium alloy suitable for casting, with the lowest possible co-efficient of expansion at the temperatures which our aero work usually meets, and at the same time endeavour to find a steel suitable for such parts as cylinder liners with the highest possible co-efficient of expansion, hoping that something can be produced as is reported from America, where the co-efficients of expansion of an aluminium and cast iron alloy have been brought to practically the same figure.
