| MARTINDALE Br from E {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} /HDY. {William Hardy} c. Dr. Off. Hp/Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} T/Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} E {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} /HDY. {William Hardy} 2/HP. 2.10.36. Wraith II Brakes. With reference to Sft {Mr Swift} /WNW/25.9.36 and the air dashpot for the front brakes which prevents a clank when the brakes go off, we think that it may be found that this can be dispensed with. Experiments are now being made on Phantom III to determine this point in the case of this car, and so far the evidence is that there is no extra noise when the damper is removed. A friction type damper would not be satisfactory as the pull off springs would have to be strengthened by the amount of the friction added, and there would therefore be the same force causing clanks as with no friction. We propose that until we have more information we should go on with the provision of a damper for the Wraith II. With reference to the substitution of an Oilite bush for the present Bijur lubrication on the servo balance lever, when the material costs are taken into account it appears that the cost of the Oilite bush will offset the saving in machining cost and that such saving as there is comes from the deletion of the Bijur drip plug. We are assuming that the bearing of the balance arm on the bracket will be satisfactory without an Oilite bush or any means of lubrication except at say 10,000 mile intervals with an oil can. We are, therefore, making a scheme for an oilite bush applied to the balance lever fulcrum only. E {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} /HDY. {William Hardy} | ||
