Wraith II Gearbox.

We send herewith N.Sch.4885 giving particulars of the spring rings and bearing grooves for endwise location to be used for three of the bearings in the Wraith II gearbox.

Messrs. Hoffmann are prepared to make these bearings for us and although it appears that they will be making them for us only, it seems likely that they will become more generally used in this country. It is suggested that the S.A.E. standard dimensions should be followed, excepting as regards the limits. We ask for +.002 on the dimension "A" instead of the S.A.E. limit of +-.003.

Messrs.Hoffmann say that they will grind the ring groove and in this case the finer limit should be easily obtained.

If Messrs. Hoffmann have any remarks to make about these dimensions will you kindly let us know.

We have not provided any packing washers in the Wraith gearbox for close endwise location of the bearings, such as are used on the Phantom III, but if any are found to be necessary, bearings with spring ring location can be dealt with by the provision of spring rings of various thickness.

Nothing has been decided as to who should make the spring rings, but it seems preferable to us that they should be made by us.

N.Sch.4885 herewith.
E {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} /HDY. {William Hardy}
