| To EH. from E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c.c. to By. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ORIGINAL X.3001 Re Cylindrical Tappet Bolts. RECEIVED With reference to your report re the above, you say that the error is partially due to valve guides being out of square, and also partially due to errors in the rockers. With the latter item we can deal, but the first is rather a serious matter. .010" on the diameter of the tappet head, namely .4", is one in 40, that is, an angle of about 1½ degrees. This is a lot. The valve guides are bored and reamed after the construction of the cylinder is finished, and should not be far out. I think it would be worth while to ascertain accurately what degree of error is due to the valve guides, and how much is due to the rockers not being square, as if the former proves to be negligible, we shall be able to retain the cylindrical tappet bolts by taking more care with the rockers.
