| (2) The tappets are very noisy when starting up. No.6 & 12 are the worst. No.10 & 11 are noisy occasionally. A distance of 15 to 20 miles has been run before they have become quiet. They can be made quiet by releasing the air from under the bell valve while standing. The trouble appears to be the leak of oil from the plunger is too rapid, and when empty a longer period is necessary to replenish the oil than with the remaining tappets. There has also been symptoms of the valves being kept open. The valve springs cause a swishing noise at approx. 60 M.P.H. due to a period of vibration of the spring coils. When dismantled the exhaust valves showed very poor seating. From all appearances they are being held off the seats. The valves are free in the guides and do not appear to have been sticking. CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL TO LOP.G.61063. H.SCR.3926. 38S2.3926. Clutch with fabrics on driven member. External clutch adjustment. The engagement of the clutch is not as smooth as the present standard clutch. It is slow in stopping either hot or cold. There has been no measureable wear of the clutch fabrics at this mileage. SERVO MOTOR MECHANISM LOP.G.8947 - GL. {G. Linnett} 700. The servo has given no trouble and has been efficient up to the present mileage. It has not had to be adjusted. GEARBOX & ACTUATING GEAR LOP.G.65456. H.SCR.3926. RH. {R. Hollingworth} SCR.591. The gears are a good standard for quietness when engaged, sideshaft gears quiet when idling. The synchromesh change which was lumpy at first quickly became smooth with use. We have had no trouble with the gearbox. LARGE TYPH CARBURETTOR LOP.A.94430. LRG.3413. R.3/8 SEMI EXPANDING. We have had trouble with the throttle sticking due to expansion and tightness in the throttle spindle bearings. The needle has been changed to obtain a better petrol consumption. The needle giving maximum speed and good metering is Rs. {Sir Henry Royce's Secretary} 1481 4° 16' - .090". The carburettor has been inclined to flood; the float mechanism being too tight on the fulcrum pins. These have been eased. CARBURETTOR AIR INTAKE LOP.G.64469. The air intake end of the silencer became loose and rattled. The rolling over of the end pieces had not sufficiently gripped and worked loose.
