RE: JAPAN(Experimental Engine) 1. SPECIFICATION.
Referring to Sg {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} 13/E.2.6/31. I have discussed this memo with Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} , and we think that Sg. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} has much too early a date in mind, representing the possibility of having the Japan(Experimental Engine) 1. chassis on the road.
Japan(Experimental Engine) 1. means completely new engine and gearbox, the latter will necessarily involve the servo, which again will drag in the equalisers and brake mechanism at the chassis end of the brakes, and therefore it is quite certain that since we have no drawings for any of the parts it is proposed to modify, that the complete unit is quite a long way off. Secondly, now that we are incorporating the deeper radiator on the present 20/25 and the improvements so far as they are known in the dampers, we know of nothing to hinder us ordering 200 sets of material en bloc in order to obtain the economies in handling which this would permit, as it is quite certain that we shall require more than 200 chassis before Japan(Experimental Engine) 1 becomes available.
